Stone Fireplace Surrounds in Michigan, Built to Fit

Every fireplace is different, so every surround is custom. These are the three styles we get asked for most.

Floor-to-Ceiling Slab Wall

Full stone slabs running from the hearth up to the ceiling, with an opening cut for the firebox or insert. The biggest visual impact, especially with bold veining or vaulted ceilings.

Classic Surround

Stone panels framing the firebox opening on the sides and top. A clean way to update a dated tile or brick fireplace and pair it with a new mantel.

Hearth & Ledge

A solid stone hearth at floor level or a raised ledge, cut from the same slab as the surround so the whole fireplace reads as one piece.

Choosing Stone for a Fireplace

Heat changes the rules a little compared to a kitchen counter. Here is how the materials compare around a fireplace.

Granite

Formed under extreme heat, granite handles fireplace temperatures very well and comes in everything from quiet blacks to bold, moving patterns.

Quartzite

Natural, very hard and heat resistant, with a soft marble-like look. A great fit for a showpiece slab wall.

Marble

The classic choice for elegant surrounds. Since a surround is not a work surface, marble's softness matters much less here than in a kitchen.

Quartz

Engineered quartz contains resin that does not like direct high heat, so it is best kept away from the firebox and always used within your fireplace manufacturer's clearances. We will tell you honestly if it is a fit for your unit.

Fireplace Surround FAQs

Which stone is best for a fireplace surround?

Natural stones like granite, quartzite and marble are the safest choices around heat. Quartz can work in some cases, but only away from direct heat and within the fireplace manufacturer's clearances.

Can you put stone over my existing brick or tile fireplace?

Often, yes. It depends on the condition of the existing surface and the wall behind it. We look at it during the estimate and tell you what is needed.

Do you work with gas, electric and wood fireplaces?

We cut the stone to fit your unit. The required clearances come from your fireplace manufacturer, so please have the model and install manual handy when we measure.

Can the fireplace match my kitchen countertops?

Yes. Many homeowners use the same stone, or a stone from the same family, to tie an open-concept kitchen and living room together.

How long does a fireplace surround take?

Typically one to three weeks from measuring to installation, depending on scheduling and how many pieces the design needs.
